Thanksgiving Weekend Thoughts #Gaza #Family #IndependentMedia #MattTaibbi #MediaMatters #BlackFriday @IndLeftNews @IndieMediaToday @IndieMediaAward
Inspired by Caitilin Johnstone's "Notes from the Edge of the Narrative Matrix" - here are some random, disconnected thoughts/tweets/ideas I wanted to get out there
It’s become increasingly difficult the past 6 weeks to find articles & important stories not related to Gaza that feel important enough to include in How Did We Miss That.
It has me wondering what the powerful are doing while most of the media’s attention is occupied on either reporting the atrocities, or somehow trying to justify genocide.
Regardless, there must be lots of other important issues are not getting the full attention. If you know of something we should be covering but nobody is talking about, please reach out or comment below.
Please indulge me for a second. #SupportIndependentMedia - we need it more than ever. Corporate media has been trying to bury, minimize or deflect from the devastation Israel is inflicting in Gaza & the West Bank. Independent media is holding their stenography and spin accountable to facts & evidence, in real time
If you are able to support
and/or INN with a paid subscription either here or at Patreon, it would go a long way and I would be deeply grateful.I put a TON of time into curating, editing and amplifying independent content; making shows, graphics, podcasts - both INN’s & others’. It would be a dream if I were able to generate the income that would allow me to do this full-time, and I would be able to do more.
Journalists Under Attack
Journalists are under attack in a way I’ve never experienced. It’s infuriating.
It’s mostly happening in the Middle East. Not just Palestine, but Lebanon & Syria too. My heart is heavy knowing that Israel is targeting journalists - and their families - and killing them all.
It’s scary - and, sadly, not too far-fetched to dismiss that it could easily happen here. It already has.
Israel has no qualms about murdering the journalists. The only time anyone does that, by the way, is when they don’t want the truth reported and want to control the narrative.
Anti-Zionist Jewish Reporters, Analysts & Commentators
Outspoken, Independent Journalists who are also Anti-Zionist Jews in the US (and there are not enough of us) that you should be following on this:
Norman Finkelstein
Lee Camp, Dangerous Ideas with Lee Camp, Common Censored, America, Inc.
Katie Halper, Useful Idiots & The Katie Halper Show
Russell Dobular, Due Dissidence
It takes a special courage to stand up to your community and family, while they are adamantly claiming that they’re the morally just despite excusing ethnic cleansing in Gaza & the West Bank. Even Anti-Zionist Jews have been attacked in Israel. Arrested for challenging the narrative.
Pro-Palestine Outlets & Reporters
Here are a few independent outlets & journalists supporting the struggle & opposing the genocide of the Palestinian people providing excellent coverage from the perspective of the Palestinians. Please follow them to put balance into your feed! Many are
honorees:Narrative Control is More Important Than Most People Realize
NAILED it today in her piece “White House Fears Pause In Fighting Will Let Journalists See What's Been Happening In Gaza” with a quote so good, it’s still haunting me: Israel & the USA desperately don’t want journalists showing people how awful the devastation in Gaza is, how they’ve displaced 1.7 million people to <checks notes> not even eliminate <> 20,000 Hamas fighters. The White House brazenly just said so in commenting on a statement about the 4 day ceasefire just announced.
Even Publishing Could Be Dangerous
I’ve had close friends who see what’s happening to journalists that challenge the US war machine & those who scream about removing the corporate control of our government, what’s happening to Cop City reporters, and they’ve been afraid for me, warning me that what I’m doing is dangerous.
It’s scary at times, but I am more determined than ever to push forward amplifying anti-imperialist & anti-capitalist truth which exposes corruption and worse, in the name of almighty profit. There are not enough of us, and one less fighter is not going to help the situation.
What’s the Truth? Cutting Through the Nonsense
It’s becoming virtually impossible for people to discern truth from spin who aren’t either working in independent media or don’t follow stories closely on a daily basis. Even the smartest get fooled by one or more of the multiple simultaneous psyops being hurled at us through our phones, tablets, radios, TVs & PCs constantly. Everything serves the corporate narrative in the name of profit, and all the profit is on the Israel side.
Tons of outlets, including the ones who are supposed to be deciphering what’s real and what’s fake, push half-truths and show partial screen shots that fit a narrative.
I’m not going to get into the extensive list of debunked material put out by the IDF proven to be false but still parroted by the corporate media, which, like Caitlin said above, shapes what people THINK about what happened.
Elon Musk and X are suing Media Matters for America for doing something like this. Media Matters flooded you with a manufactured story that suits their narrative, never telling you it was artificial. They created a scenario where X had to show ads from major corporations next to the “controversial” posts MMfA wanted to show next to those ads. They weren’t even necessarily shown to users. There’s no count on how many impressions those ads had next to “controversial” posts.
“Media Matters… exclusively followed a small subset of users consisting entirely of accounts in one of two categories: those known to produce extreme, fringe content, and accounts owned by X’s big-name advertisers. The end result was a feed precision-designed by Media Matters for a single purpose: to produce side-by-side ad/content placements that it could screenshot in an effort to alienate advertisers…
Media Matters therefore resorted to endlessly scrolling and refreshing its unrepresentative, hand-selected feed … until it finally received pages containing the result it wanted: controversial content next to X’s largest advertisers’ paid posts.”
My Advice: Create Your Own News Feed!
In order to cut through the nonsense to know what news to believe, first, you need to learn who to trust. That itself can take time. In order to get a broad view, it takes subscribing to dozens of newsletters, websites, following hundreds of outlets on social platforms. Then maintaining & updating that list as things change. Also taking into account that no outlet or journalist is flawless, everyone has blind spots and biases.
What you end up with is a well-curated stream of news designed to tell you what’s happening from the perspective the people who are actually experiencing it, taking into account the biases of the people reporting & the news outlets showcasing the story.
If you’re interested in learning who I think is the best of the best, I saved you the time, and it’s totally free - check out the
Substack. You may find different sources, or not like some of these, and that’s ok - but this is a good place to start for independent news & analysis that challenges narratives.I really don’t want to put any work behind a paywall, but the most of the successful creators seem to, with very few exceptions (Lee Camp, Caitlin Johnstone, Judd Legum come to mind). Would you unsub if any content was paywalled?
