One of the more significant contributions Julian Assange made in creating Wikileaks was creating the vehicle for whistleblowers to anonymously and safely share material that clearly were crimes, but were covered up by powerful interests. Before Wikileaks, there were only authoritative channels to use, or a whistleblower had to rely on the “mainstream” corporate controlled press, which is usually friendlier to authoritative channels and favors capital and the bosses over individuals and workers. Many stories were intercepted and the whistleblower fired or disciplined before the wrongdoing could be reported. Wikileaks sought to alleviate that.
There are many who believe that the USA is using the Iraq War Logs leak as a proxy to convict Julian for all of the leaks and embarrassment Julian has caused the US State Department and Intelligence Community since 2006.
Most people, when asked, believe Assange is being prosecuted (persecuted) for a role in the 2016 US election and Hillary Clinton’s emails and the Trump Tower Meeting with Donald Trump Jr. in June 2016 - which is NOT THE CASE. It is for publishing the material Chelsea Manning leaked to him in 2012 that the USA has charged him with 18 counts of violating the US Espionage Act - even though Julian is not a US Citizen, nor was he in the USA when he published the leaks. The US Justice Department needs to DROP THE CHARGES!
It’s remarkable that the USA can chase a foreign citizen, living on foreign soil, imprison them and subject them to US law.
Vault 7 Leaks: Do You Know What They Are?
While famous for the Iraq War Logs in 2012 and the Podesta Leaks surrounding the 2016 US Election, one of the more significant leaks was the 2017 Vault 7 Series of leaks (link to the press release announcing their publishing (https://wikileaks.org/ciav7p1/).
“WikiLeaks begins its new series of leaks on the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Code-named "Vault 7" by WikiLeaks, it is the largest ever publication of confidential documents on the agency.
The first full part of the series, "Year Zero", comprises 8,761 documents and files from an isolated, high-security network situated inside the CIA's Center for Cyber Intelligence in Langley, Virgina. It follows an introductory disclosure last month of CIA targeting French political parties and candidates in the lead up to the 2012 presidential election.
Recently, the CIA lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal including malware, viruses, trojans, weaponized "zero day" exploits, malware remote control systems and associated documentation. This extraordinary collection, which amounts to more than several hundred million lines of code, gives its possessor the entire hacking capacity of the CIA. The archive appears to have been circulated among former U.S. government hackers and contractors in an unauthorized manner, one of whom has provided WikiLeaks with portions of the archive.”

The Vault 7 leak embarrassed CIA Director (at the time) Mike Pompeo - which, in my opinion, is when he convinced others to classify Wikileaks as a “hostile non-state actor” (i.e. terrorist) - meaning they would effectively suspend the standard rules of engagement, opening the door to things like Michael Isikoff detailed in his September, 2021 Yahoo News investigative report about Pompeo & Trump plotting to assassinate Assange in London during his potential extradition.
